Procrastination is a thief of joy! It is a stealer of life and progress. But could it also be our friend? I think the answer to all these statements would be YES.
My doctorate was in conflict resolution and political history and one of the most important things that I learned is that there are a lot of truths on all sides of a debate. It is too easy to become polarised into thinking that we are always right and there is nothing to learn. There is always something to learn and when we listen more, we have a golden chance to grow. Therefore, if we can take out the judgemental emotions from any situation, we are much more able to be clear about what is really happening. So, procrastination is both a trouble and a help! It is how we use it that matters rather than letting it use us!
Sometimes it can be a wise helper that allows us to consider all the options and think about the caution we need to consider before moving forward but what happens a lot is that we become stuck in a nasty cycle of thinking too much and never moving forward.
After thousands of hours trying to help clients work through their issues with procrastination, I have come to some conclusions and will keep seeking more. We all have a lot of choices to make every day. We can all think a lot about them and then consider the possible consequences.
My advice is to:
DO the best you can with the knowledge that you have at the time.
Then make the next wisest choice.
I keep seeing people worrying themselves to the point of exhaustion about making the perfect choices in life. This is such a waste of life and time! Doing our best and then making the best of what we do is a superpower. You’re much more powerful than you realise! Take the load from your tired shoulders and think calmly. It can help to make a list, then put that list into an order of priority and ease and give yourself a reasonable timeline to achieve it.
Thinking about procrastination in a neutral way will reduce your stress levels and help you make a wise plan. Good luck my friend. I know you will do well.
