One of the many things my clients have taught me is that their desire for mental peace comes with additional blessings. When we build mental strength, there is often an unexpected outcome ~ our physical energy improves. There seems to be a connection, maybe even a correlation, between our rumination of thoughts and the draining of our stamina. What we think about really does matter. Think good thoughts and all shall be well ~ if only life were that simple ~ but maybe we make things too complicated.
Once we have given a topic or situation a reasonable amount of brain space, there is not much to be gained from going over it repeatedly. But we seem programmed to repeat the process, replay each step or part of a conversation. We ask ourselves: Where could I have done better? Why didn’t I say this or that? Why did I let that happen? Or at least some version of these powerful probes. AND THEN, once these questions are answered, even when there are rarely any more answers to be found, we keep digging! While digging is good for gardens, it is not good for our souls. We only need to do the appropriate amount and then let things settle so that good new things can grow.
People who come for counselling, life-coaching or both tend to be givers. They have often given a great deal in every area of life, and often overthink things. The men and women who seek me out realise that life can be unfair, but it can also be glorious; it’s just the balance that is all out of shape. They need some boundaries, self-worth, confidence and clarity, which our 1-2-1 sessions provide. You don’t have to live in the North-East of England to access my Lifejoy coaching and counselling ~ we can do video calls or even use old-fashioned landlines! Whatever suits you! One of the best things to observe is that people can be worn out by life, but with the wisest care, can regain their zest for life. They can leave my sessions feeling lighter and brighter, with wise coping strategies and self-assurance growing.
Perhaps the most endearing part is that the younger people who come can prevent many problems with therapy early in life; the middle-aged people have enough time to reset and renew, whilst the elders of our society savour the years they have left with even more vigour and joy. As for the gents, because their loved ones have told them that they must take care of themselves, they leave with a sense that they don’t have to hold up their entire worlds, and that’s just peace itself!
One of the outcomes of our sessions is that they all gain the ability to discern what they think and, most importantly, together we learn to THINK WISELY and WELL! Once that is possible, much more peace, joy and natural health can rush into the space created. Peace is such a blessing, and like all blessings, it needs to be recognised, cherished and protected. Maybe the really important questions we should ask ourselves are: What have I learned? How can I work on these lessons and turn them into blessings for others? What is the next wise thing to do? These are the truest power moves in finding peace ~ respecting it and then working towards it every hour of every day.
When you’re aware of your thinking and where your thoughts are leading you, you are in a much better position to see where your energy is going. Then you can choose where to spend it! Don’t waste your time on things that can’t be changed. Don’t waste your time on people whose behaviour has been disappointing. Don’t think about bad or sad things.
Decide what takes up your time in your mind. This takes discipline and practice ~ but you can do it! Of course, life can be wonderful, bumpy and bewildering ~ but you are your constant companion in life, so be the best one you can be.
